The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was established at the summit of the leaders of 25 Muslim countries on September 25, 1969 in Rabat, Morocco. Until 2011, the organization was called the OIC - Organization of the Islamic Conference.
The summit was convened at the initiative of King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia and King Hassan II of Morocco.
The main objectives of the OIC are to ensure closer cooperation among Muslim countries in the political, economic, cultural and spiritual spheres. It also advocates the values of Islam, the promotion of dialogue among civilizations and faiths, the creation of a common market of Muslim states, and the sustainable development and economic well-being of member countries.
